Commentary

At line 2, the name Εὐοπίδας would fit the letters shown on Ferri's drawing and not interpreted in his discussion.

If Ferri was right in supposing that line 3 had the dead's age, 83 years, this indication would lack the use of the normal symbol for ἐτῶν. Furthermore, this would be a strangely early instance of that formula. The letters might as well pertain to a third personal name. We prefer to leave the question open.

However, d'Addazio observed recently the first line of the inscription 'inside a rock-cut tomb', so that the funerary interpretation seems good. It is a pity that his photograph, mentioned in his text, was eventually not printed in the publication.
