White marble block, cut in the shape of a tau, probably on occasion of a re-use, broken off at right and chipped off at the left end of the face ( 0.50 0.085 0.295 ).

 Inscribed on the broad part of the face. 0.025 with serifs; pi with shorter right bar, non slanting sigma. Findspot. Perhaps second century B.C.

Found before 1977 at Cyrene: exact findspot unrecorded.

Commentary

Too many names might be restored as the father's name. The name of the kings of Egypt (including for some periods Cyrenaica) was very popular in Hellenistic times for people of all social levels. However, in the lower layers, it was progressively changed into Πτυλ(ε)μαῖος. The use of the traditional form shows that its bearer was sticking at some degree to traditions.
