English translation
(Statue of) king Ptolemy, God Soter, son of king Ptolemy the second Euergetes (dedicated) by Stolos, of the First Friends, archedeatros (i.e. chief stewart), on behalf of his well-doing towards himself.
Italian translation
(Statua del) re Tolemeo, Dio Sotere, figlio del re Tolemeo Evergete secondo, (dedicata) da Stolos, dei Primi Amici, archedeatros (i.e. capo maggiordomo), in considerazione della benevolenza nei suoi confronti.
Commentary
The base was re-used and the artist's signature related to the first use was not erased. However, as it stood at the rear of the base and as its letters were upside down, it should not be mentioned as a part of the present monument.
This inscription and IGCyr015900, both in very good condition, have allowed to restore another dedication by Stolos erected in the port of Cyrene (IGCyr102500).
On Stolos, the Athenian admiral, see Bagnall, 1972 Bagnall, R.S., 1972, Stolos the Admiral, Phoenix26, 358-368 - see in bibliography , who proposed for the Cyrenaean dedications a date between 108 and 103 B.C.; Hauben, 1977 Hauben H.1977, Was Stolos a Cyrenaean?, Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik (ZPE)25, 221-226 - see in bibliography , who explored the possibility that he was a born a Cyrenaean and granted Athenian citizenship. On behalf of his aulic title and office Mooren, 1977 Mooren, L., 1977, Le hiérarchie de cour ptolémaïque. Contribution à l'étude des institutions et des classes dirigeantes à l'époque hellénistique, Lovanii - see in bibliography , pp. 186-188 considers this inscription as dating from 108 B.C., somewhat earlier in the year than IGCyr015900, where he is also 'in charge of the reins'.
The findspot and date of discovery are known from a recently published report of excavations (see Luni, 2014 Luni, M., 2014, Attività di Carlo Anti, Luigi Pernier e Gaspare Oliverio (1923-1938), in M. Luni (ed.), La scoperta di Cirene. Un secolo di scavi, 1913-2013, Monografie di archeologia libica37, Cirene Atene d'Africa8, Roma, 123-156 - see in bibliography , p. 153). Quite normally, honors for the king were exposed on the agora.
